Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene = in the scene or fame

There are different types of mise-en-scene:
  1. Settings and props
  2. Costume, hair and makeup
  3. Facial expressions and body language
  4. Lighting and colour
  5. Positioning of characters and objective in the frame
  • The setting is where a media text takes place.
  • Props are the object we see in the setting.
  • Positioning of characters and objects within a Frame.
  • Where  objects and characters are positioned is very important.
  • It can be in the foreground, middleground or background.

Colour
-Denotation = the literal description of an idea, concept or object.
-Connotation = what we associate with a particular idea, concept or object.

We need to talk about Kevin
-There is a lot of red and a little bit of bright white.
-The film might be about pain due to all the red.
-The main character is represented as the colour grey.

Psycho
-Around the room on the wall there is weird birds which are all predators
-Nude photo's on the wall
-Which represents Norman as a sexual human predator
-This foreshadows as he kills Marion nude
-His body language show's him to be on edge, as he is fidgeting a lot
-What he puts out is different to what surrounds him in his parlor
This performance in Psycho tells us the audience that Normal is a sexual predator, as his parlor represents him. Even though his body language tells us he is nervous around Marion. All of this leads up to him murdering her.

-Distance between characters can tell alot about their relationship
-Deep focus = is when both fore and background is seen in focus

Casino Royale
-It begins in black and white
-It has a lot of dim lighting and seems gloomy
-There is silence which makes it tense
-The low angle on the elevator make the man seem tall
-The camera follows the man which is like the audience is spying on him
-The long black coat makes the man look like a villain
-The bright dirty public toilet contrasts with the  dark office
-This represents the two sides to bond, the public toilet scene being the real bond
